2. STEEL STUD PARTITION INSTALLATION

2.1 General

The sequence of installation of the steel stud partitions and furring shall be closely coordinated with the Contractor and the various trades whose materials and/or services are being installed within the partitions and metal furring.

The steel stud partition types are designated on the drawings in accordance with the partition or wall types schedule.

2.2 Steel Stud Layout and Installation

Install track at floor and ceiling, accurately align according to partition layout. Secure at 600 mm (24”) o.c. maximum, using shielded screws, power driven fasteners, or other suitable fasteners.

At partition corners extend one track to end of corner and butt other track; allow clearance for wallboard thickness; do not mitre tracks.

Fix studs to tracks by screws using type specified under Part 1, Item 2.3.

Install steel studs vertically at stud spacing specified and not more than 50 mm (2”) from abutting walls, openings and each side of corners and termination with dissimilar materials.

Maximum stud spacing based on gypsum board both sides of studs shall be as follows:

bullet12.7 mm (1/2”) board – 400 mm o.c. (16”) applied parallel

bullet12.7 mm (1/2”) board – 600 mm o.c. (24”) applied perpendicular

bullet15.9 mm (5/8”) board – 400 mm o.c. (16”) applied parallel

bullet15.9 mm (5/8”) board – 600 mm o.c. (24”) applied perpendicular

Maximum stud spacing based on gypsum board one side only shall be 400 mm (16”) o.c.

Provide space for deflection under beams and slabs as detailed on the drawings to avoid transfer of structural loads to studs. If deflection track is used steel studs shall be 12.7 mm (1/2”) short of underside of slab or beam to allow for deflection. (see Note 4).

Splice studs where necessary by lapping studs a minimum of four (4) times the width of steel studs. Fasten with two screws or rivets per stud flange located not more than 25 mm (1”) from ends of splice.

Permanently attach all studs for freestanding partitions to top and bottom tracks.

Where horizontal runs of service lines are to be installed and if standard openings in studs are too small for service lines, splice studs together as necessary, splice piece to be minimum 300 mm (12”) longer than height of the cutout; splice as specified above.

Refer to drawings for various conditions at specific locations. (See Note 12).

For interior steel studs out of plumbness shall not exceed 1/500th of the stud height measured at any one location.

Stud height limitations shall be in accordance with Table 9.7/5 for stud width and spacing used. Table is based on single and double 12.7mm (1/2”) thick layers of gypsum wallboard attached with screws spaced at 300mm (12”) o.c. to 0.46mm (0.018”) steel studs spaced at 400mm (16”) 600mm (24”) o.c. and with assumed lateral pressure of 240Pa(5psf) (See notes 8 and 9)
